Coming a couple of days after my post on the Racist attacks on Italian gypsies is the news that in Austria between them two! far right parties have polled more votes than the mainstream parties in their elections. With their Mussolini and Hitler connections, there is more of a history of Fascism in both countries, but lest we forget Oswald Mosley and his black shirts, and the Nazi skinheads of the 70’s and 80’s, especially in the light of a recent survey of young British people, were two thirds thought immigration was ‘diluting’ national identity and a quarter said it was taking away jobs. In the wake of the Austrian election results, it is not known what impact the votes of 16 and 17 year olds has had on the result; not only was it was the first time they had been able to vote in their election, but Austria were the first European country to give the vote to young people in a National Election, but why should we worry cos it wont happen here, NO! IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE! and it’s down to us to make sure it doesn’t.

As a teenage Punk I found skinheads fairly scary back in the mid/late seventies. These days every other guy has ‘No. 1’ cropped haircut but back then it marked you out as a genuine psycho. It’s important to remember that not every Skin was racist. Paul Simenon from the Clash was an ex -Skin, and he certainly wasn’t.
Most definetly anon,I never ment the post to come across like that. You only need to look at the SHARP movement Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice,in the USA and Welsh Oi band The Oppressed. Interestingly this started in late 80's, as maybe a way to set the record straight because yer original skins weren't Racist, but during the late 70's and early 80's the National Front and BNP began to influence the movement and used them for their own ends, ie as foot soldiers for their shite racist politics, which at the time were a reaction to the state of the nation, 3 million unemployed, jobs being taken, no money, and the need to blame someone. Sounds a bit familiar, which is the worrying thing. Cheers for taking the time to comment anon.
It is really horrible that right wing policy is becoming more and more trendy and popular in europe. Mostly all of the eastern europe countries have very strong rightwing following. I know that because I come from one. Just yesterday the supporters of the local football club from my hometown did a bloody violent rampage in Prague. They were fighting police and throwing stones and bottles but also they were saluting with nazi right hand high in the air. Unfortunately most of the right wing activity comes from teenagers that are skinheads and football hooligans. It is not unusual that on national teams football games people chant racist and fascist songs on the terraces. Lately it is like patriotism is connected with right wing here and no one cares. Sometimes I feel ashamed to be a fellow countryman to those "people" ... and I really don't know what to do ... to be sad or to be mad. I just had to share this with you.
Thanx
