2013....The Beat Went on!

2013....What's been released this year and going round and round on my CD player. Well....In no particular order we have.... JOHNNY THUNDERS with Hurt Me, this album showed his tender side; stripped naked with just a guitar, a brittle and beautiful listen NIKKI SUDDEN, The Boy From Nowhere Who Fell Out Of The Sky is a six CD box set. A lovingly crafted and compiled collection of Nikki’s work. Both these were reissued by the wonderful Easy Action Records. Sweet Revenge by the criminally ignored Punk'n'Rollers the LIGHTNING RAIDERS, was not so much a re-issue, because back in the day it was never released. Knox may not be touring with THE VIBRATORS but On The Guest List shows he's still part of the band, with a collection of songs that rank amongst the best he's written, and all supported by a cast of special guests. The UK SUBS, they just keep going, and going and getting better as they go, maturing with age disgracefully. CHARLIE HARPER and CAPTAIN SENSIBLE, this was a real surprise Too Much Reality....took Punk to a new Psychedelic underworld of neon grey. GLM, released three blinding Rocky yet slightly poppy download only tracks from their website. DEADCUTS, do just that....they cut you dead! A switch-blade to the throat of all the taste-makers and trend-setters. Deadcuts are out there and have got something special going on. BABYSHAMBLES Sequel To The Prequel, a brilliant album, Pete Doherty has been the only real Great British Rock'n'Roller for the last....fuck knows how long. THE MOB returned with a single Rise Up! an anthemic call to arms. THE FITS, reformed legends of the UK82 Punk scene, returned with some Punk Rockin' action with their Lead On EP. NEW MODEL ARMY, released a dark and moody master piece, and JAMES KING AND THE LONE WOLVES crawled out of the wreckage with some sublime swamp rock blues. Finally a couple of Punk'n'Roll supergroups cut through the crap this year. THE CRUNCH with their album Busy Making Noise which is a blast of pure Power Pop Punk, their line up includes former members of the Cockney Rejects, Lords of New Church/Sham 69 The Clash and Diamond Dogs. THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOYS, include a Twenty Flight Rocker (Gary Twinn) Sex Pistol (Glen Matlock) a Gen X/Chelsea (James Stevenson) Blondie (Clem Burke.) released three stompin' tracks via their web page. Hopefully an album will be released in 2014. Finally PRIMAL SCREAM's 2013 was a real return to form, a musical and lyrical statement of intent. Well there you have it a year in my Rock'n'Roll world....Here's to the next one!

Something old and new from Primal Scream. The Old; a Smash Hits interview/article from March/April 1990. The New; a recording from their recent appearance on 3rd April 2011 at XFM’s Benefit for the disaster in Japan. It’s a short but sonically sweet and rawkus set, with Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols/Rich Kids/Johnny Thunders) standing in on Bass for Mani. PRIMAL SCREAM - Live in 1991

It’s 20 years since Primal Scream released their Screamadelica album, so here’s a couple of live shows from 1991. I first heard Primal Scream in 1989 when they released their sexy sleazy leather clad second album. Forget their debut album, a load of substandard second hand Byrds shite. Their third album Screamadelica on the other hand is a totally different beast to either of these. It’s a visionary piece of work that took the past and turned it into the future. It’s Ecstasy loaded grooves embraced the new rave sounds of the 90‘s, but never once forgot its soulful Rock’n’Roll roots. A sound greater than the sum of its influences. Anyway I couldn’t chose between either of these Scream live recordings, so here’s two for the price of none. Take a trip back to 1991 in either Nottingham or Leicester. Enjoy! Screamadelica has been re-mastered and re-packaged and is about to be re-released. The revolutionary becomes part of the retrolutionary.

PRIMAL SCREAM - "Do you wish you were seeing Kylie Minogue?....well fuck you!" (Glastonbury 2005)

It’s that time of year when the alternative cultural consumer fest of Glastonbury takes place. In 40 years the underground has become the overground, the alternative is now mainstream. “You’ve got the money we’ve got the soul” Primal Scream’s Glastonbury appearance in 2005 was no loved up Screamadelica groove, although Bobby Gillespie was well loaded, this was some Evil Heat with bad vibrations, a brilliant confrontational and controversial performance. A blistering apocalyptic rock’n’roll drone. Sick City splutters and stalls with Bobby announcing “We are a punk rock band and you’re a bunch of fucking hippies” before the song is kick started back to life again. After Detroit Bobby declares that “The war on terrorism is a pretext of setting up an international police state.” During Swastika Eyes Bobby gave a Nazi salute which didn’t go down well with the organisers, by the end of the last song Movin’ On Up the band refuse to leave the stage, with Mani playing a snippet of the Stone Roses I Am The Resurrection’s bass line, and Bobby telling the audience “Well you should have been here fifteen years ago you lazy bastards” if they wanted to hear the Stone Roses. The power was cut and Bobby Gillespie was physically removed from the stage. Hear this legendary set here. Enjoy and Destroy!

ROCK'N'ROLL:STAMPED OUT!

It’s official! Rock’n’Roll is no longer the subversive force of rebellion that it used to be. It hasn’t been for years, but with the release of the series of classic album cover stamps its death knell has been given the royal seal of approval. I mean....and I love both these bands, but....The Clash and Primal Scream hardly royalist/establishment loving outfits now are/were they. Who’d have thought back when London Calling and Screamadelica were released what the future would hold for these two classic albums. Still I suppose it could be seen as some sort of ultimate subversion, I dunno....How the times have changed!

PRIMAL SCREAM - F***k The Festivals!

There’s not many bands whose new releases I look forward to; Primal Scream are an exception, they have been one of the most consistent and hard working bands over the years, forget their naff debut, but from then on in each release has either reaffirmed or reinvented the power of rock’n’roll. From their MC5/Thunders influenced much underrated self titled second album and on to the dance groove of the groundbreaking Screamadelica, then the sleazy druggy Stones’n’Roll of Give Out But Don’t Give Up. Vanishing Point finds the Scream machine experimenting with a post dance/dub rhythms vibe. My two personal favourites are Xterminator and Evil Heat, which find the band in a harsher, angrier and more political modus operandum. Riot City Blues harks back to their more traditional heads down no nonsense boogie, but still a glorious riot of tunes. So it’s with anticipation and slight excitement I await the arrival of the next scream selection; Beautiful Future, what a great and ironic title considering all the shit that’s going down in Britain and across the world at this point in time. The festival season is also approaching, not that I’ll be attending any. Paying a small fortune to get either sunburned or soaked to the skin, drinking watered down lager watching loads of crap bands while waiting for a few good ones aint my idea of fun anymore, but no doubt there’s plenty of people looking forward to going to one of the many that are happening, me…I think I’ll turn the stereo up and spend 3 days in my garden listening to a few live bootlegs. If anyone fancies joining me, here’s a couple of Primal Scream festival appearances: Reading 1994 and T in The Park 2002 only thing is my garden's full up, so you’ll have to find an alternative venue.
