THE DEAD 60'S - Time To Take Sides (Unreleased 2007 Album)

The Dead 60's were from Liverpool. Their self titled debut album was released in 2005 along with a succession of killah singles. In 2007 the band relocated to New York to record that 'difficult second album'

They'd come to bury the 90's Brit-Pop era with their brand of high octane incendiary ska punk, inspired by the likes of seventies reggae legend King Tubby, The Clash and the Gang Of 4. If there was a natural successor to The Ruts, then The Dead 60's were that band. Unfortunately despite major support slots with the likes of Garbage, Social Distortion, Morissey, Kasabian and travelling across the US as part of the Vans Warped Tour, where the band became a big hit on Alternative Radio with their 2004 single Riot Radio. Major success eluded the band, they never received the commercial/critical acclaim of bands like The Enemy or Hard-Fi, which is a real shame and they announced their split in 2008, leaving behind one album, a string of stomping and skanking singles, and this their unreleased second album Time To Take Sides, a collection of songs from the streets, tales of urban angst, anguish and anger. Five years after its non-release Time To Take Sides still sounds relevant today, because socially nothing has really changed in Britain, if anything its got worse. The working week is still boring and the weekend too short. Kids are still growing up in dull towns, in a country run by liars, that is still at war in the desert sun, and it's still time to take sides and stand up! ENJOY!!

It’s that time of year when everyone starts preparing lists of this and that Top 50’s etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. Well this is gonna be a list free zone, mostly on account of I just can’t be bothered to think what’s been good and bad this year, it’s all just been. Anyway as I’ve started typing I suppose I better finish what I was gonna say which is; For me the outstanding musical releases this year have come from those old kids on the new block CARBON/SILICON who in true punk rock tradition decided after a few years of Mpfree downloads via their web site, (just when every other band is catching on to this idea) to release their stuff in the more traditional manner. The News EP, The Magic Suitcase EP and The Last Post LP for me at least are like I said before THE outstanding releases of this year on so many levels, musically and lyrically they are superb and once again, but this time 30 years latter Mick Jones speaks to and for a generation in a mellow yet still angry manner. Brilliant stuff. While I’m at it might as well mention THE ENEMY who’s debut We Live and Die In These Towns was a call to arms for a new generation, and also THE DEAD 60’S who’s new album Time To Take Sides planned for early release next year is, thanks to the wonders of the internet a corker. Any way enough waffle here’s some tuneage.

IT'S THE BEAT GENERATION

Once again the wonders of the internet and the conscience of the blogger have provided me with the chance of listening to another pre-release. This time it's THE DEAD 60'S second album; Time To Take Sides, and it's fucking great and has helped to lift my mood this week, which can't be bad, the power of music. For this album the 60's haven't so much dropped their ska influences as to add a dose of power pop to them. There are bits that remind me of The Motors and Bruce Springsteen, this shift is gonna see the band either get a major slating or a massive rating. Personally I don't give a shit, it's a great album with soul and passion. Anyway if you wanna here it get searching on the web or wait until it's released, either way its worth it. If you like The Clash, The Ruts and Scum Of Toytown then you really need to get yer ears round this lot. A Skatastic bunch of scousers; THE DEAD 60'S. During NME's much hyped 'summer of ska' a couple of years ago the British music lovers took Hard-Fi to their hearts and kicked the Dead 60's into touch, the fools. Pop friendly sells, punk anger doesn't. Fuck 'em their loss, they went down a storm on The Vans Warped tour in the U.S.A.
