SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK - Early Demos (1984 - 87)

Back in 1985/86 SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK were either the future of Rock'n'Roll or one big over hyped piece of shit. All mouth and pink trousers, wigs, make up and high heels, with Rock'n'Roll riffs, techno dance beats and samples, this was the sound of the 21^st Century. I saw 'em several times and they were one of the best live bands I've seen, and their debut album Flaunt It is a desert island disc of mine, but enough of that shit, here are a collection of demos from 1984 – 87, these as far as I am aware are not the same as those released as the First Generation album. COLBERT HAMILTON and THE HELLRAZORS (Vinyl-Rip)

I first heard Neo-Rockabilly hero Colbert Hamilton the UK's original Black Elvis. when he supported Sigue Sigue Sputnik at Kilburn National Ballroom in 1986, I think it was. I ‘m pretty sure he came on before the Tai boxing fight, which was the other support act, the ticket and advert say he did but I’m fucked if I can remember. I also recall someone letting off some tear gas during Sputniks set, Ultra Violence and all that. I digress. Colbert blew me away in his silver suit and with his Rockabilly rhythms, so much so I bought this, his debut album, when I got paid next, and played it quite a bit. It was released in 1984 and is more stripped down than I remember him being live, it’s also a lot cracklier than it was when I bought it, the rip kinda gives it an almost authentic 1950’s feel, apologies for that folks but it’s here if you wanna blast of some Rootsy Rock’n’Roll Rhythm. Here’s a little bit of Rock trivia for yer: Colbert Hamilton was quite possibly the last person to record with Thin Lizzys Phil Lynott, The track, called 'Do You Want To Rock?', was recorded three weeks before his death it was produced by Lynott and sung by Colbert Hamilton, Phil also featured on bass and backing vocals. As we’re on the subject of trivia, here’s a little question for yer: Can anyone tell me what the connection between Phil Lynott and Neal X from Sigue Sigue Sputnik is? No prizes for the correct answer, cos it’s all about the taking part. This post goes out to brutha Nekro and his death party.

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK - Live in Manchester, Sept 1985

Another well, well, well played bootleg tape of mine. I Saw Sputnik at Abbey Road Studios in Dec 85, and they totally blew my mind, coming on like nothing I’d heard before, a 21st Century space age New York Dolls, it would be a good few months before they released any product, so all I had to listen to was this here recording of a gig in Manchester a couple of months before Abbey Road. Once the product was out there and the hype began , they were everywhere, people had a love hate relationship with the band you either loved ‘em or hated ‘em. Audiences reacted violently, band responded violently and found themselves all over the tabloid press; SICKY SICKY SPUTNIK one headline screamed. Sigue Sigue Sputnik were not yer average Rock’n’Roll band, but one, who largely due to ex Gen X bassist and leading Sputnik figure Tony James saw where the future was at; with their use of samples, repetitive techno beats and visuals it was very similar to the vision of Mick Jones’s Big Audio Dynamite, who in Sputniks early days was their sound mixer. Not the first nor the last time they worked together, but hey we weren’t here to talk about London SS or Carbon/Silicon. Anyway, enough of the bollocks, here’s the music!
