STEVIE VAYNE AND THE SLAVES - Guarana / DAVE KUSWORTH - The Bounty Hunters

After the collapse of The Vaynes, singer Stevie hooked up with a new bunch of musicians who he christened The Slaves, and released the album Guarana, named after a stronger coffee like bean from Brazil, it finds him in a more reflective and introspective mood than previously, more Lou Reed/Velvet Underground than Iggy and The Stooges. This rip is from a promo tape I blagged of Stevie when they supported Johnny Thunders in Stevenage. The other support band that night was Dave Kusworth and The Bounty Hunters, so it seems an appropriate time and place to post this; The Bounty Hunters, his 1987 debut album, classic Kusworth that pulls on the old heart strings with an aching beauty that is only surpassed by his work with Nikki Sudden, brilliant stuff. Gonna tie up a few loose ends here, I’ve posted stuff by all these bands before, so there should be no real surprises. With this lot of releases that’s about the sum of all their musical output, both past and present. So with out further ado, let’s get on with the show. First up it’s those sleaze merchants THE VAYNES with their sultry second album Vayneglorious. Next it’s the Useless Pop EP from agit punk ’n rollers THE GLORY STRUMMERS, Finally, because all good things come in threes, or is it twos? I dunno, fuck it, whatever, it’s those new gods of the gutter THE SKUZZIES with their mighty fine Shotgun Solution EP. An overdose of THE VAYNES....hit it!

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted any music, and it’s been a while since I’ve posted any of this bands stuff, so here ya go with some good old honest no frills, but lots of spills and thrills rawk’n’roll from The Vaynes, captured on three 12” singles; Baby Cruel, Rock’n’Roll Crime and Big Cities, all released between 1987 and 1988. If yer into Iggy Pop and Johnny Thunders and all that jazz, then you really should check these out. One track of interest is Fun Parade from the Big Cities 12”, which pointed to a whole new direction the band could have taken, if they hadn’t split up/disappeared without trace. It’s a shame The Stone Roses beat them to it, cos if they’d carried on in this vein (pun intended) The Vaynes would have been fore runners in the dance/rock sound, rather than a footnote in the annals of 80’s rock’n’roll history. I did wonder where they were now, so made some enquiries via Mick Webster, former Johnny Thunders tour manager and associate of The Vaynes and now Kaiser Chiefs manager. He informed me that Stevie(singer) had moved to America and Mick (guitarist) had gone into medicine!! dunno if this is a reference to drug abuse or a career as a doctor, Mick never elaborated, and I didn’t want to waste anymore of his time. So there you have it, well almost, just gotta post their second album Vayneglorious at some point and that’s pretty much it from The Vaynes. Gone but not forgotten.

ALIVE IN 85 With: TheTwentyFlightVayneWolves

These 3 bands are no strangers here, so without further a do, I’ll get on with it. First up it’s the no nonsense debut album G.T.F by those Iggy/Thunders Rawk‘n’Rollers THE VAYNES, or DEAD VAYNES as they were called for this release. Next we’ve got the 2 singles Tower Block Rock and Johnny 7 from the TWENTY FLIGHT ROCKERS with their Gene Vincent meets The Clash Sound‘n’Style. Finally to slow things down a bit there’s the jangling Rock’n'Roll guitar lurch of JAMES KING AND THE LONE WOLVES with their The Angels Don’t Know 12” Enjoy!

THE VAYNES - Mr.Fixit (12" vinyl rip)

Straight out of 'Goth'em City Leeds' circa 1985 come The Vaynes. A glorious Rock'n'Roll beat combo, in the vein (pun entirely intended) of Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders and Slaughter and The Dogs. This is pure unadulterated rawk'n'roll. Previously known as The Dead Vaynes, a reference to their notoriety as mainline drug users, surprisingly they got it together to release an album; GTF, on Batfish Incorporated. The record label set up by the Batfish Boys, and produced by Batfish Boy Simon D it came out in 1985. Two years latter, they released this 12" on their own label Vanity Records. A glam slam reference to drug use; Mr.Fixit, co produced by Matt Dangerfield, formerly of The Boys and featuring an appearance by Nev from Leeds punkers the Abrasive Wheels on drums. The B side Cinderella has Craig Adams from The Mission playing Bass. Midnight Gun the final track on the 12" is taken from the aforementioned GTF album. So if you like yer music a bit Punky and a bit Rocky with a hint of Goff then this is a band for you, if it leaves you wanting more then there could be plenty more to come.
